SACRAMENTO (Nov. 18, 2021) – The Board of State and Community Corrections is looking for a diverse cross section of Californians to serve on committees that will establish criteria for two public safety grants.

The federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program and the Proposition 64 Public Health and Safety Grant Program provide a combined $170 million in funding to local communities.

The BSCC will convene two executive steering committees with diverse membership and both professional and lived experience. The committees will meet publicly to establish criteria for the grants that align with the respective authorizing legislation.

The BSCC receives a portion of tax revenues from the sale and cultivation of legal cannabis as part of the Prop 64 program. That funding, which is estimated at $120 million, is for making competitive grants to local governments to address public health and safety issues associated with the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act. The BSCC hopes to establish committee membership by mid-January 2022 and to present the RFP for Board approval by April 2022. Final committee recommendations tentatively are scheduled for September 2022.

The Byrne JAG grant will provide an anticipated $46 million in federal Justice Assistance Grant Program funds for competitive awards. The grant funds are designed for a broad range of programs including, crime prevention and education, drug treatment and enforcement, and mental health programs.

Both ESCs will meet to develop the Request for Proposals, read and rate proposals, and develop funding recommendations for the Board’s approval.

• In other business the Board awarded $835,000 in competitive Proud Parenting Program grants to eight entities, including community-based organizations and county offices of education, to fund projects that support young parents who are or were system-involved. The purpose is to teach skills that create positive parent-child relationships. The BSCC received 33 proposals requesting almost $31 million. The grant is for three years.
