Inmate Sterilization Procedures (SB 1135) Data Collection


Under CA Senate Bill 1135, through CA Penal Code § 3440(d)2A, the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) is required to collect all relevant information regarding the sterilization of inmates from California county jails and other institutions of confinement. This data includes the number of sterilizations performed, disaggregated by race, age, medical justification, and method of sterilization. It shall be compiled and published annually on the BSCC website.

2025 Results

Fifty-six (56) counties responded to our data collection survey. Of the 56 survey respondents, two counties reported performing inmate sterilization procedures during the 2025 calendar year. Please see the 2025 dataset below.
